Question Cutting out! - anyone else had it & cured it?

Gonna strip out sam unit to check connections as noticed that when car cuts out at low revs, usually during gear changes, some relay under the dash goes mad. If I can get it into neutral the second it starts clicking, it will usually restart straight away, but most of the time it gets stuck in gear with the single bar flashing & it takes 30 secs to 2 mins to get into neutral to restart. Took it for a run yesterday & in the first couple of hours it cut out 6 times, the first time it died in the middle of the Queensway tunnels in Brum, just round a bend - not nice!

What sort of price am I looking at for a diagnostics check???

    Thanks bob!

I've had the sam unit out today, stripped it down to the bare pcb. All the soldered joints looked mint, no signs of moisture at all, no burn marks or anything. Pulled & checked each & every fuse, then re-assembled it all. Also removed & re-fitted the green plug in rear of the speedo (keep but must say that it wasn't a very snug fit - is this normal???) Anyway, put it all back together, connected the battery then went for a drive. Only had 1 minor hiccup, whilst creeping round a conty lane about 10mph, the engine management light flickered for a split second & put me into manual mode instead of auto - BUT IT DIDNT CUT OUT....

Will see how it goes for next few days & will post up results.

Why are you thinking SAM? I would have thought it more likely to be the MEG. Did you check the earth lead on the engine?

I would also suspect the engine earth lead as the most likely culprit. 23 for replacement earth set from Kane (Smartmods). Why not slap a set in and see what happens?

Thanks guys, will start doing the dirty end after work, weather permitting. From what I can see from the top, it looks about 12" long. Is that about right? I've got an old amp kit with a 16awg earth strap about 3 times thicker than standard. May even fit an extra lead to be doubly sure!

Original Smart earth lead measures 410 mm between centres of lug holes.

Lug holes are 6 mm diameter not the more common 8 mm.
