    The wire from the pressure sensor will run to the ECU most likely then send a voltage to the lamp. The vulnerable (to a short) will be within the engine bay.
    Print of this thread and take it and the car to a garage ASAP.

    Crawl under rear end of car from behind. Locate oil filter. Oil pressure switch is only a few mm above oil filter.
    Drives a Smart Cdi - 65 to 85 MPG

    They could at least check the things mentioned (source of leak, PCV valves, oil pressure switch, turbo, etc) and form a diagnosis. If the motor is shot, probably better to buy another secondhand.

    I'm wondering if the engine is at that stage now where it runs into problems... It has 70K on the clock. My last Smart car was drinking oil like no tomorrow and that was the time to change it.

    Surely though, the oil leak issue is connected to this oil pressure problem?

    Possibly, but it's hard to tell over the internet.
