    Two Piston Smart

I knew things weren't going to be good when I saw this

But I wasn't fully prepared for this

And I don't think the head is economically salvageable

I'm sure there's something missing here

And I don't think the block is salvageable either

I'd be very happy to hear any suggestions, because I don't seem to have many options at all

    Bad news indeed.
New 2nd hand engine preferably from a Roadster if you feel the rest of the car is worth it.

PS. Where did the piston go? Photo please?

    You tell me!

I guess there was a lot of detonation going on, not that I could hear it, or sense any loss of power. The failure took no more than five seconds, with no warning at all.

Sounds like it'll be a piston lined sump

Sorry to have to disappoint, but there won't be any further autopsy. That engine is gone, long live the replacement I've just bought for 350 inc shipping.

I might well be back asking for engine swap advice...

Probably this, ouch. Those photos paint a grim picture. Engine replacement is probably the way to go on this one as Tolsen suggests for economic reasons...

    ...as you've done. Straight swap with a 600 or a 700cc?

Gone for another 599, because if I have to do another piston ring and valve job in a couple of years time, it will be much easier than with a later engine.

Not sure what the Roadster recommendation is about, care to elaborate?

Is the rest of the car worth it? Yes for 350, but up until I saw the internal devastation, I was really shocked by the amount of corrosion on the Tridion. Was there really no corrosion protection at all?

I thought my TVR was absurd, but now I can see that the Smart is even worse for corrosion protection.

Lend it to Tolsen for 12 months, that should fix it properly. I wish my 450 looked like his underneath instead of like an iron ore quarry.

I am sure Smarts are painted in some cheap water based paint. Comes off in large flakes with a powerful pressure pressure washer. Once dried out the rest comes off with a compressed air jet.

Suggest you coat your under body in Body Schutz. Cheap only five pounds per litre. I am now in the process of life extending my Kangoo Trekka. Have applied 13 litres of body Schutz so far. Used 6 litres when coating my 450.
