    not seeing first gear

Hi all. Our 07 451 has had a new clutch fitted because two days after we bought it the flywheel was flapping around with just one strap holding it together.
Luckily we didn't have to pay to get it fixed but it has developed some quirks.
When you drive off it will start in 1st move up into 2nd and then it will make a weird wizzy squeal sound, the binnacle will flash what gear is selected but it won't show 1 st gear and two spanners will flash too. No fault code will show. When the car is left for a few mins it will the work as normal. Now and again there is an error code showing bank 1 senor 2.
I just thought I would pick your brains, you never know

Take it back and get the faults sorted or buy a different car.

Take it back. Reject the car if seller can't fix it. These are poorly designed and made cars so better off with a Skoda or Moskvitch.

I also think you need to take it back if that is an option. You haven't mentioned any time scales in this so maybe these secondary faults have developed after some time.

It really does help when asking things like this if you include timescales. Also relevant is whether or not you bought the car form a Smart dealer. My first thought here is that they have not had the equipment to "teach" the clutch after they replaced the gearbox but without more information that is just a thought.

Having owned both the 450 and the 451 I have to disagree with what Tolsen says to some extent. Like most cars subsequent models are not as expensive to make as the manufacturers have learned what corners can be cut to shave a few pennies off but generally this is not too detrimental. The 450 is certainly better made. They don't have rattles and knocks the same as the 451 does but with time, a hot glue gun and other bits of sticky stuff the rattles can be fixed and for sure the gear change on the 451 (if the car is right) is much better than the 450. To me the biggest problem with the 451 is the lack of back windows, it makes quick manoeuvring a bit nervy.

The Moskvitch never had gear problems and also never suffered any malfunctioning electronics.

Hmm, possibly true but the only ones I ever worked on were not going anywhere anyway. Smarts don't have gearbox problems if the engines don't work, I never quite worked out why that is but most cars are like that.

Okay the car was so called fixed about two weeks ago but it started playing up shortly afterwards. It did it again today but after it's been left for a few minutes it will clear it self. It's not going back because they are not a smart dealer, just some back street dealer. Looks like I will have to pop into a Smart specialist tomorrow.
    Cheers all.
