    It's not arbitrary , the car is nine years old , and no mention (and probably no record) of any brake fluid change being done in that time...

    Whether it's a PITA, or costly because diagnostics is needed to do it properly , it's your brakes for gods sake. at nine years old it's almost certainly way overdue a brake fluid change/bleed.

    Absolutely it needs changing but the time to do it is after you have found the fault, not before.
