    Turbo flutter on lift

Had the Smart for about ten years.

Very recently we noticed the chatter/flutter sound between gears when lifting the throttle in "manual" mode.

Turbo has nearly 100k miles on it now. Engine was rebuilt and Fudged 30k ago.

Anything to be concerned about? I know many folks like that chirrup sound.

It's completely normal and nothing to be worried about.

Just goes to show you are using the rev range of the engine if you have only just started to hear it!

If you've lived with a car for ten years, and then you notice something sounds different, chances are something has changed.

At a guess, perhaps the turbo wastegate is getting partially seized, on mine this is due to cracks in the manifold.

That is definitely something that would emerge over time.

The flutter is the turbo stalling, which is generally considered undesirable, as it increases stress on the system.
