Our car insurance is due soon. Current insurers quote was 1500 for the 4 cars (R320, Smart For2, Roadster & C3) Aviva have quote 900+ but Direct Line are come up best so far of 800something.

The main problem I have with the insurance companies and brokers is their stupidity. They can never find my model hence I end up paying too much in insurance.

Mine is a 2002 Smart Cabrio model 450 with 0.8 diesel engine. They keep saying no such car exists but I know otherwise as I have one parked on my drive.

When renewing this year I made a note of the various models that Aviva has listed on their site:

    Aviva

    Smart

    2002
    Models: Crossblade, Passion, Pulse, Pure
    Fuel type: Petrol
    Gearbox type: Automatic

    2001
Models: CDI, LIMITED, PASSION, PULSE, PURE
Fuel type: CDI diesel, others petrol
Gearbox type: CDI & LIMITED automatic. Others automatic or manual.

    2003
Models: BRABUS, CROSSBLADE, ORANGE, PASSION, PULSE, PURE, SILVERPULSE, STARBLUE
    Fuel type: Petrol
    Gearbox type: Automatic

    2004
Models: BRABUS, CROSSBLADE, ORANGE, PASSION, PULSE, PURE, SILVERPULSE
    Fuel type: Petrol
    Gearbox type: Automatic

Not a single Cabrio is listed and the diesel only for 2001. Most other insurance companies and brokers seem to use the same database so this problem will persist until the end of times.

And of course no point explaining that these are all model 450 and that they have confused model and trim.

Trying to tell them that it is LHD but not a grey import is like kicking treacle.

It is one of the reasons I didn't buy a CDI earlier in my Smarting life.

The 2001 CDI they have on their database is in fact stated to be a left hand drive. The main problem is their stupidity. What a cocked up list of models and trim level. Smart themselves is part of the problem.

I provided a long list of "modification" which surprisingly had no impact at all on their fee:

    Modifications my Smart 450:
Rubber floor mats, engine RPM gauge, cruise/ max speed control, outside temperature indication enabled, CD disc changer, tweeter speakers, bass speaker boxes, manual gear change on steering wheel, dashboard colour changed from an annoying bright yellow to black, seat covers, automatic gear change mode enabled, lockable driver underseat drawer for storage, tow bar, electric oil pan heater for heating engine on cold wintry mornings, winter wheels on steel rims, 12 volt socket in boot area, underbody and chassis cavities rust proofed, spare wheel with wheel brace and jack, bicycle carrier fittings.

Pretty safe bet they would try to use it as a reason for not paying out if he hadn't mentioned it.
