Question Throttle Blipping on Idle - Why?

My car has started blipping the throttle when idling

It seems to happen more when the car is up to temp

The blip lasts a fraction of a second and the revs raise to no more than 1200

Far less often the throttle will do the opposite and drop to 800 momentarily

This can happen once every few minutes, upto once every 20 seconds

It is happening more frequently than it used to, and is not generating confidence in the car

Any suggestions? Faulty sensors? Faulty connections?

The only thing that has occurred to me is that the Cruise Control has become unreliable over roughly the same period of time

The cruise installation requires that the accelerator pedal is plugged in to the cruise unit, so my next plan is to remove cruise, reconnect the accelerator directly, and see if that stops the blipping

    Failing that any other ideas?

For as long as there is doubt about the above......

.....eliminating it as a suspect as you intend is first move.

Only the tendency for cracked exhaust manifolds and the accompanying 'surging'. I've never experienced the surging so can't say if it's similar to your problem or not but someone here should be able to advise.

The 450 has cruise built in but not enabled. It doesn't need another box connecting to anything, just the steering column switch plugging into the loom and enabling in Star.

That is interesting, but also a bit strange - why would anyone go to the trouble of developing an aftermarket cruise control in that case?

If I call up S2Smarts and ask them to quote to enable cruise, since I already have the cruise stalk fitted, I wonder what they will say...

I think this is what I fitted - MisterDotCom Cruise Control

It certainly looks familiar - it was years ago though!

Cruise control built in applies to 450 Smarts made from 2003 with SAM. Models with ZEE like my Cabrio made in 2002 need separate after market cruise control module. I think most were made by misterdotcom.

It sounds like it may be a sticking throttle body. I suspect this may also disable the aftermarket cruise control if the cruise detects that the car is not doing what was requested by it.

Certainly first step is to disconnect the cruise and see if the car still hunts.

Cracked Turbo Manifold can 'make the vehicle pulse under acceleration'

The manifold on mine is thoroughly cracked, could that be the cause of the idle blipping?
