Question Speed Related Vibration Rumble Puzzle

My car has very recently developed a speed related vibration that peaks at 40 mph

Well obviously it's a wheel bearing, except I've lifted the car and can't feel anything on any corner

I've had a Smart wheel bearing fail before many years ago, so I think I should be able to recognise the symptoms

But this time I am stumped, each wheel is very smooth with no resistance at all

It is very clear at 40 mph, but becomes much less obvious at 70 mph

    What have I missed?

Why have you ruled out tyre/wheel balance?

Because although wheel imbalance can cause very unpleasant behaviour, it doesn't cause anything so notchy

It really does feel like the work I did on the front suspension has caused debris to get in to the bearing races, except I can't feel it in any individual wheel

Wheel bearings do not become unbalanced. They become unbearably noisy.

So perhaps a better question is - how do I identify which wheel bearing is faulty, without replacing each of them in turn?

Best price I can find is £32 for each complete hub assembly, so it's a lot more expensive than cars where it costs a few pounds for new races

I think you need to do a video of it because it does not sound like a wheel bearing from your description.

Jack up a corner. Spin wheel and listen for rumble. Grab wheel and check for bearing play. Repeat on each wheel.

Same going on here. Suspect it is NS but it was replaced recently. Just running until enough play develops to ascertain which side is shot. MOT next week could be interesting...
