Loom
Hello,
I have a ForTwo 2006 Passion and I’ve been told I need a new loom, but the garage I’ve always used won’t do it. I don’t want to use Mercedes as their prices are astronomical. However if I have to then I’m going to need to save up. Basically does anyone know someone that can help do a new loom that’s fairly close to Worthing, West Sussex please?

Hi, think your nearest Smart indie garage is https://www.smartcarspecialist.com/ who are in Guildford.
Hope this might be of some help.

What is the problem with your existing loom?
It seems like a very strange conclusion unless you were talking to a Smart specialist. If it is the gear change loom then just mend it, it is not a difficult or big job.

Thank you. I really appreciate it.

I was just told it was probably the loom and no local garages will touch my car.

It's a few years now since I did my engine rebuild and one of the things that made engine and gearbox removal difficult was removing all the connectors from the various engine and transmission sensors and actuators.
To make it easier to re-install I disconnected the loom at the ECU (the one in the air box) and reconnected all the engine transmission connections before refitting the engine then all I had to do was reconnect at the ECU.
My point here is that the loom is removable from the car. At the time, (end of 2016) that part of the loom was still available from main dealers but I can't remember the price. I only enquired as I pulled a connector of its wires but in the end identified it as being the same as a fuel injector connector and sourced one of those from a place in Kent and soldered it on.
Removing the loom though is a PITA. The injectors as I recall were proper nasty to disconnect.

UPDATE:
The electrics have been checked and everything appears to be working. The issue with my car is all the dashboard lights come up when you try to start the car but when you turn the ignition you just hear a whirring noise and the car doesn’t start. It’s had a new alternator and a starter motor fitted. So that’s why people are now telling me it’s the loom! When the car was working when I had the alternator and starter motor done it would drive fine but would suddenly cut out as I’m driving. It then wouldn’t start or it would start after e.g. hour and work again. But now it won’t start at all.

Is the whirring the engine actually turning over ie being cranked or is it more of a rattle and no engine turning?
When it cuts out - does it do it as you are slowing - typically at a junction with the engine idling?

Sounds like the Crank Position Sensor is faulty. This sensor tells the ECU that the engine is turning & when to fire the coils & injectors. Without this info the car won't start.
This normally throws up an error code in the ECU.
What happened to my car was when the engine was warm it would cut out on tick over (stop at junction) & wouldn't restart until it cooled down.
Replaced sensor, which is on the bell-housing & problem solved.
