    Question Overheating in the Summer

Fine during the winter, but overheats on motorways in the summer

Waterpump is a couple of years old, but both the rad and the thermostat are likely original

    Which should I suspect?

Thermostats TEND to fail open, so the car will over cool cool rather than over heat.

Flush the cooling system before you start replacing things. Any sort of extra vibration / noise in the car? if so most likely water pump.

Coolant was changed a couple of years ago, so I took the plunge and bought a brand new Nissens rad for 85 delivered

The aircon condenser was punctured before I bought the car, so it is tempting to put a used one in at the same time, but only if I can find one for peanuts

I've never heard the rad fan run, only ever the intercooler fan

Check the radiator fan first in that case to make sure it actually works

Thanks, I never did find an easy definitive way to check whether the fan actually runs, any suggestions?

A fan is unlikely to run on the motorway any way, as there'll be enough air flow over/through radiator due to the car moving. If a car is overheating on the motorway, I'd suggest that either the stat is failed partially closed - but unlikely or, the radiator is blocked.
